About

"Heavy mineral analysis application in petroleum geology" is very first research project of our Chapter. Few members of AMU PSC are involved to a project: Klaudia Walczak, Paweł Ryder, Mikołaj Kowalczyk, Joanna Michalak and Bartosz Pieterek.

The objective of the project is to prove the usefulness of the analysis of heavy minerals (HMA - Heavy mineral analysis) in petroleum geology. The project envisages the acquisition of several cores from boreholes and samples from outcrops of Rotliegend (Lower Permian) located within basins of reservoir potential. The obtained data will be used to describe, correlate and assess the quality of the reservoirs using the HMA

During last weekend (24th – 26th of October) few of our members engaged in project: Klaudia Walczak, Paweł Ryder, Joanna Michalak and Bartosz Pieterek together with AMU Student Chapter of the AAPG advisor dr. Wojciech Stawikowski investigated outcrops of Rotliegend (Lower Permian) formations in North Sudetic Basin. The group of students searched the area for sandy samples with possible heavy minerals concentration. Our team reached Rotliegend outcrops near among others Nowy Kościół, Świerzawa, Bolków and many other smaller locations. The research was really challenging due to difficult outcrops location and old scientific description of geologic maps. Samples will be compared by many features with samples from Polish Lowland and will be studied later on at AMU Institute of Geology laboratory.

On the 22th of September our members Klaudia Walczak and P. Ryder visited one of the facility of Polish Petroleum and Gas Mining Company (PGNiG SA) - Central Storage Facility of Drill Cores in Chmielnik (Centralny Magazyn Rdzeni Wiertniczych PGNiG w Chmielniku). The main purpose for visiting was to investigate and sample drill cores from selected intervals of Rotliegend (Lower Permian) formations. Over a dozen of drill cores were derived mainly from Polish Lowland Area. Klaudia nad Paweł were looking for cores with possible heavy minerals concentration. Further laboratory research will be continued at our AMU Institute of Geology.
